A common-source outbreak of CH in golden lion tamarins and pygmy marmosets at a US zoo resulted from a single feeding of the primates with newborn mice in^ppLnTirSei wkh tymphocyttc chonomeningitis virus (LCMV). Thus, LCMV, an arenavirus prevalent ^ wHd n^^ m the US, can cause sporadic fatal hepatic disease in primates. Exposure of humans to wild or laboratory mice or to marmosets and tamarins that are infected with wild-type strains of LCMV poses the danger of serious disease.

Callitrichid Hepatitis: Epizootiology of a Fatal Hepatitis in Zoo Tamarins and Marmosets
Epizootics of an acute, fatal hepatitis affecting tamarins and marmosets (family Callitrichidae) have been reported in two zoos in the U.S. and Europe. Two new epizootics of hepatitis affecting seven golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) and three emperor tamarins (Saguinus imperator) were identified at the Oklahoma City Zoo in 1984 and 1986. Livers from these animals showed hepatocellu...
متن کاملCaptive-born cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) respond similarly to vocalizations of predators and sympatric nonpredators.
What types of cues do callitrichid primates use to detect and respond to predators? Do they respond to predator-specific cues or to more general cues? The evidence for these questions remains conflicting. We presented captive-born and reared cotton-top tamarins with no previous exposure to predators (or predator cues) with vocalizations from three potential predators of cotton-top tamarin in th...
متن کاملBiased hand use in captive emperor tamarins (Saguinus imperator).
Comparing forelimb use across primates can improve the understanding of the mechanisms and functions of brain asymmetry. We broadened the comparative framework by investigating hand use biases across spontaneous behaviors in 11 captive emperor tamarins of 2 family groups. We found a right preference across 58% of pooled unimanual bouts and 60% of all tasks. The maximum biases for a single task ...
متن کاملSleep quantitation in common marmoset, cotton top tamarin and squirrel monkey by non-invasive actigraphy.
Sleep quantitation data on the Neotropical primate species, apart from the squirrel monkey, are still sparse. As such, we have quantitated sleep in the common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), cotton top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) and squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) reared in one primate facility simultaneously, by non-invasive actigraphy. The range in total sleep time/24h measured for male ...
متن کاملDevelopment of Heterosexual Relationships in Wied’s Black Tufted-Ear Marmosets (Callithrix kuhh]
In tamarins and marmosets, long-term stable sociosexual relationships are formed between heterosexual adults, but these “monogamous” relationships are often formed in groups that contain multiple adults of both sexes. The patterning of interactions during pair formation may therefore be shaped by this demographic profile. We evaluated the development of sociosexual relationships in six captive ...
